While working on all my goals for this year - I stumbled across Chatelaine's 31 days to a healthier you. I figured these would be a good place to start since "healthier" is exactly what I am looking for. Today will be my first day --- and it's easy enough. Reviewing my horoscope for 2012.

Here it is for any fellow Gemini's (and I know I have a few of you as readers!):

Gemini (May 21 - June 22)

Think back to the summer of 2000 through to the summer of 2001. What was going on back then? Your confidence level was high and you were branching out in some new way or in some new direction. You can expect more of the same for 2012, especially from June through December. It’s a positive, once-in-every-twelve-years kind of opportunity, so say yes to whatever the Universe offers up!

Your mantra for 2012 is: I choose to have faith in my abilities.

Love: You’re redefining your bottom line in all your primary romantic and business relationships this winter/spring. Where are your boundaries? You may not really know until someone pushes them. They will too, especially on January 4th, April 9th and most notably on the Eclipse of June 4th! At that point you should be able to define exactly what it is that you want, (or equally as important, what you don't want!). An engagement, marriage or second honeymoon could be part of the scenario this summer!

Money/Work: The March 21st New Moon earns you a spot in the limelight. Finally! All your hard work starts to pay off and your reputation soars. Image is key at this time too, so don’t hesitate to fake it ‘til you make if you need to! Financial opportunities abound once bountiful Jupiter enters your sign in June. Be watchful for opportunities, as calculated risks, offers and prospects tend to pay off big time.

Here's what I got out of it: I don't really remember 2000 or 2001. I'm sure I was having a good time - I would have been 19/20 years old and probably was out on vacation with my friends having a blast. I'd love more of the same this year.... especially if it only comes along once every 12 years!

"I choose to have faith in my abilities" sounds like a perfect mantra. I'll repeat it to myself often. Since the engagement/marriage part have already happened -- I'll sign up for the second honeymoon. We'll be returning to Tahoe in April for our 1 year wedding anniversary, and I'm really looking forward to it. I'll work on being prepared and open to any financial opportunities this summer as well.

All sounds good and positive to me!

Friday Fixation: The Hunger Games

I want to thank my friend Meghan for having me read The Hunger Games. I finished the first book in a few days on my kindle - it was such an easy read that just sucked me in. Now that I've watched the trailer for the movie -- I am equally excited for that. I like the main actress in it - she was in Winter's Bone too - which I just watched and liked as well.

Here's the trailer for The Hunger Games if you haven't seen it. I'd agree with my friend and highly recommend reading it! I can't wait until February when I can get my next free read on my Kindle... so I can read the next book in the trilogy - "Catching Fire."

Valentine's Day Cards

I love getting cards for people. Half the fun is planning in advance and getting something original instead of the normal quick dash to Target or Rite-Aid. It's always good to load up on some unique cards in advance. I do that for wedding and birthday cards as much as I can.

So in honor of the next card holiday - I thought I'd share some nice Valentine's Day ones that I've found. I'm sure its no surprise to my regular readers that I'll start with an "I'm Owl Yours" card from Kate's Paperie. Its a wooden card - which I love - totally eco-friendly. A bit expensive at the $8.95 mark though.

Etsy is always a good place to check out for cards - and they can be more affordable too. I like this "Love You Like Whoa" card from the Love you Paperly shop.

Vintage style valentines are always fun too. Paper Source has this set of 12 for $13.95 that is adorable. They always have such sweet and innocent pictures on them! The tin that they come in is cute too.

Luxe Paperie has a nice mix of cards to choose from as well. My two favs? The Kate Sutton Choo Choo Choose You card and the Elum Designs plume letterpress that says "You make my heart go Boom Boom" - I mean, look at the lettering on that!

Anyways, those are some places to start. I found some adorable Valentine's post cards on etsy too - but I don't want to share yet - since some of my readers might be receiving them!

There's still time to order cards... don't wait last minute and end up at Target!

Around Town: January 22

Has anyone heard of these "Creative Juices Events?" It's an awesome chance to mix cocktails with canvas (as they say.) Tomorrow is an event at Il Fornaio $45 a seat. It sounds like a fun event. Check out their calendar for other upcoming options like Feb. 3rd at Piatti.

If you are into Music or Photography (or both) it seems like it would be worth checking out this "Rock Air: A Tribute to Sacramento's Music Scene" exhibit at the j27 gallery. There are some awesome, high jumping, rocking photos at some local musical landmarks - like Old Ironsides. The exhibit is open thru Jan. 31 - so check it out this week!

I've mentioned events at Borjorn Winery before - and they are one of my favorites up in Amador County. If you're looking for a little wine tasting this weekend, maybe you should stop by. They'll be featuring a verticle tasting of Sangiovese from '07 thru the current 2010 barrel tasting. Worth checking out.

Friday Fixation: My Declutter Calendar

One of my goals for 2012 was to get more organized about house cleaning. I found this Declutter Calendar at MySimplerLife.com that is super helpful at getting started. I've been trying to do at least the one thing a day that it mentions - and I love it. I already feel like its helping. Sometimes the "clean one drawer in your bathroom" turns into clean the whole bathroom... which makes me feel like I'm getting somewhere.

I really recommend it. So of the items don't apply so you get a little break here and their. All you have to do is sign up for the email and you'll get the link to the calendar to download for free.

Around Town: Week of Jan 15

If like the big outdoors, and you haven't already bookmarked this, do it now. REI has some great events and classes they offer, some of which are free. The one I'm mentioning for this week isn't free (and might be sold out by the time I post this) but I still wanted to share it. You can start getting prepared for camping this spring / summer with a backcountry cooking class. $65 for nonmembers and $45 for members.

Another item on my goals for 2012 is to get outside more this year - so hopefully I try some of these classes myself. Has any of my readers ever gone to any of the REI classes? Let me know what they are like!

For those with kiddos in Sacramento - have you checked out the Sacramento Children's Museum? They have some events worth checking out including a Lunar New Years Celebration the 21st and 22nd. If you've already been to the museum - share some feedback in the comments, I'm interested to hear about it!

I mentioned last week the Dine Downtown - and that is still an option for the first 1/2 of this week as well - so you still have time to check it out.

A Friend of mine asked me if I would do a feature on my blog where I answer friends / reader questions. I can't really imagine that too many people have anything they'd want me to answer - but I agreed to at least answer her questions.

Here is her first: How can you be Texas chic with a California Twist?

Texas has some great bits to offer - but I'd say that's the key. Bits. Adding bits of Texas to your style can be great. I'm loving this 10 ways to sparkle more in 2012 post over at Glitter Guide and adding a bit of glitter is a great start for Texas chic with some California twist. Own some nice jewelry? Wear it!

Here are some items that completely qualify to add some Texas to your style. The first - these Dannijo Valerija Earrings (First picture on the left.) Of course for $348.00 they aren't any where near my price range - and they are sold out - but you get the idea. Those colors say southwest and the size says Texas.

Of course, boots are an easy Texas style to add - and I just love these red ones (photo on the right.) Again, a bit out of my price range - but I think a good pair of leather boots might be worth an investment.

A third obvious accessory to add is the hat. I've been attending the Clovis rodeo with my in-laws for a few years and its such fun. I bought a hat I love at target and it looks a lot like the one on the left.

I especially like the turqouise adornment on it -- as turqouise is another obvious texas-style accessory.

Spell and The Gypsy Collective (the very top photo is from their lookbook) is a great place to look for some items that would fit the Texas chic style perfectly - and most of the prices are great.

Hairstyle is another option. Everything is big in Texas, right? If I was going to go big - I'd go big with a messy bun / pony tail like this picture on Pinterest. But I think I like my cowboy hat too much to go too big on the hair!
Again, the real key is find what fits with what you have and that is easy enough. As I finish writing this post - I'm thinking more and more that some real cowboy boots might suit me fine for the rodeo this year....

Around Town: January 8

I talked about the Williams-Sonoma calendar last week - and I want to mention another class they are offering this week. This is one of their classes that costs $$ - but I think the idea of a cookbook club would be awesome! January 11th is the 1 1/2 to 2 hour Cookbook Club class that highlights a different cookbook each month. For $75 you get the featured cookbook plus a three course meal. Kind of expensive for my taste -- but I love the idea! It would be neat to get a group of friends together to do. (Anyone interested?)

January 14 is Second Saturday - which is always a good time to get out and about in Sacramento. If you're heading out for this one, maybe stop by and visit the Sacramento Ballet. They will be exhibiting some photographs as well as their "Fire Calendar" will be on sale for $10. Plus you can meet and greet the dancers. The studio is located at the corner of 17th and K Streets.

And of course, its the time of year for Dine Downtown - where you can get a 3-course dinner for $30 a person at participating restaurants. This runs from Jan. 9 thru the 18th. There are some good choices, Delta King, Ten22, Ella's... yum.

Well here are my goals for 2012. I mentioned them yesterday in my Around Town post, but this is the official list.

1.) Be a better blogger (talked about this yesterday)

2.) Exercise!! (I didn't lose the lbs. that I wanted to last year - see 30by30 list so maybe a 20 in 2012 goal?)

3.) Get Outdoors! (This kind of goes with Exercise - but I really just want to make sure I am enjoying the outdoors as much as I can.)

4.) Support the Community - Give back more.

5.) Read 50 books this year. I've done book challenges before and this year I'm going to up it to 50. I'll be tracking this on Goodreads.com and it should be attainable - last year I read 37. I just need to get off my kindle fire (unless I'm reading) and roku.... and open those books.

6.) Get into a routine with house cleaning. I know this is kind of silly. I'm not super messy or anything - but my time seems to get away from me. I really want to be a bit more organized with cleaning. I found this chore tracker / planner on pinterest - and might try it out to begin with. I'll especially need to have this figured out once we have a house. With more rooms.

I'm giving myself an incentive. If I stick to a exercise schedule from now till my birthday - I might be investing in the awesome yoga bag up at the top. oGorgeous has some lovely yoga / workout bags that can add a little sparkle to your workout. This silver and aqua pleated pocket bag is my fav.

Something I'm hoping happens in 2012 - but its not really resolution material is getting into a house. We will be making this a priority trying to capitalize on the low house prices and low interest rates. We'll see.

Around Town: 1st week of 2012

One of my goals I've set for this year (more on this tomorrow) is to get more readers on my blog. Or at least more comments. I like doing this around the town weekly post -- and hope that some fellow Sacramentans can find it useful. I'll try and be more regular.

First thing I want to mention is Winter Trails Day on Jan. 7. REI sponsors this free event at Royal Gorge Ski Resort so head on up for some fun / free snow activities. Hopefully we've gotten some more snow by then!

Williams-Sonoma always has great classes - so if you are in Sacramento, check out the list for January. If I didn't have to be at work - I would definately attend the Winter Dinner Inspiration class at 11am on Wednesday the 4th. The class are free unless noted (but call to reserve a spot.)

Another goal for the year is to support my community more. We are already members of the Crocker - which is great but I want to expand that in 2012. So I joined American River Natural History Association this year as well -- and we are thinking of joining the Zoo in July (in time for the Twilight Thursdays.) The ARNHA membership gets you free parking at the Effie Yeaw Nature Center - where they have great free and cheap events.

This Sunday, Jan. 8, they are offering at Nature's Art Box class at 1:30p at Effie Yeaw. Its free and supplies are provided. Doesn't get much cheaper than that!

Guys can be hard to shop for. They either don't really care at all so it seems worthless to buy them any thing or they are so picky that its hard to please. I try really hard to find gifts that people will be excited about - so I thought I'd do a gift guide for the guys.

I'll start with the whiskey rocks idea. There are a few different types of these things out there. The whiskey rocks at petite alma are made of stone and small (3/4" each) and run $20 for a set of 9 and were my favorite of the ones I saw. This gift isn't for every guy -- I know my dad for instance makes his drinks stronger and counts on the ice to dilute the drink over time. But for some this could be perfect and fun. Maybe pair it with a nice bottle.

Keeping with a whiskey theme - check out Woodenville Whiskey Co - and their "Age Your Own" program. If you have a guy on your list that likes to brew beer - and might want to take it to the next step this is it. It's basically $150 for a kit and the barrel can be reused up to 5 times. I might have gone this route for my husband - but he still hasn't used the brew kit I bought him for Valentines Day.

Wallets and bill folds are another popular guy gift and The Fold from Leffot is my favorite. They have two sizes and seem so compact and well made. They are a bit on the pricey side ($95 for small and $120 for large) -- but worth it.

These Tank Cig Packs of some classic books - are the perfect size for a guys back pocket. They have a tin that has 6 packs of literature in the size of a pack of cigarettes. Or a few of them are available separately. I'd really be interested in what these look like in person - but the pictures online have definitely caught my eye.

So there is a start for the guy gifts. Hope that helped with some ideas!

I love the treasuries over at etsy. They are fun to browse through and they are fun to put together. I thought I'd put one together based on the 12 Days of Christmas.

I'm sure a lot of you have heard of the Elf on the Shelf - but I just love this tradition. It's a book with a cute plush elf doll that is watching for good little girls and boys and supposedly comes to life every night and moves around the house. I just love it. The official website has some neat things too.

I can't help but share the Baby Buff Rattle. Something about a little one playing with this just makes me laugh. Maybe the picture has something to do with that -- but I had to enclude it here.

If you're looking to encourage your little girl to get active in sports (or dance / gymnastics) check out these Go Go Sports Girl Dolls. They seem to all be under $20 on Amazon... and its a great role model doll - especially if you have a little girl just starting to play some kid team sport or starting a dance or gymnastics class.

Another item I just love is this wooden smart phone teether. I love browsing thru etsy - as most of you know - so when I saw this I had to share it. Any iphone addict friends with kiddos will find this funny. And you can personalize it. Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving! Its a great time of year -- and here are some fun local activities to try this week.

This coming weekend, on Dec. 3, Lowes is featuring a Build and Grow clinic where kiddos can build the first part of their build and grow train. These clinics seem like a great opportunity for kids to make something unique. You come back every week after that to build a new part for your train.

If you need some help getting in the Christmas spirit - Runaway Stage Productions is finishing up its production of White Christmas! Buy tickets for Friday, Saturday or Sunday. Its one of my favorite Christmas musicals.

Something else that always meant Christmas time to me growing up was the Messiah Sing-a-long. The Camillia Symphony Orchestra will be hosting a Candles, Carols and Messiah Sing-Along on Dec. 4th at St. John's Lutheran Church this year. The concert is $10 and you can purchase a song book for $15.

Happy Thanksgiving! Hope everyone is having a great day with friends and family. We were lucky enough to start early with a Thanksgiving Dinner last night with they hubby's family.

Hope everyone takes some time to really be thankful this holiday -- we are all lucky to have the things we have and the people we love in our lives. I try and be greatful for things everyday -- but there is no excuse to not remember today.

There is a great blog post over at Simple Mom that really says it well - about "When you don't want to say thanks." Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Oh - and I am very thankful for all of you readers - my friends and family and any readers I don't know. Thank you for reading my little blog!

Gift Giving Guide: Office Gifts

I'm going to do some gift guides this year. Here's my first.

If you trade gifts around the office I've come up with some cute gift items this year for coworkers.

A 2012 Fashion Illustration Calendar by Inslee Haynes is perfect for any fashionista coworker or friend. The illustrations on this calendar are georgous and everyone needs a calendar near their desk (I have two that I can see at all times.)

Coworkers with a good sense of humor might enjoy the book "Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?" by Mindy Kaling from The Office. She's kind of like an up and coming Tina Fey - which is another good suggestion for the funny office gal: "Bossypants."

If you want to get something small and simple for your morning coffee buddy - I just love the monogrammed cups from Anthropologie. Its a great simple design and super affordable for an office gift - at $6. You could stuff it with some Via from Starbucks or something.

First, I must say - that I am really enjoying Fall this year. I had a great Halloween and I'm looking forward to an amazing Thanksgiving and Christmas too. Here's a photo of my favorite fall drink - to get you inspired too!

So this week I want to first share with you some local places that can provide you with amazing parts of your Thanksgiving dinner. First, Beantrees Coffee at 925 L Street does a Tandoori Turkey that you can pre-order. They do up to 12 pound turkeys and they purchase and season them for you - you just pick it up and cook it! $3.00 / per lb.

For a thanksgiving dessert - you should check in with Ginger Elizabeth. You can pre-order her yummy looking Chocolate Caramel Cinnamon Citrus Thanksgiving Dessert for $42 and it feeds 12-16 people.

Both are great options if you're feeling like you need a little help with Thanksgiving Dinner this year.

Also -- a note about downtown Sacramento - cars are returning to K Street this weekend! We'll see what that ends up meaning... and if its going to add any life to a fairly dead area of downtown.

Kitchen Sink Carbonara

Nights when I'm home alone for dinner, I get creative. Sometimes it turns out just O.K. and sometimes it turns out wonderful. This was one of those wonderful times.

I love Carbonara. Its probably my favorite pasta dish - but its pretty high in fat / cholesterol so I never make it. But one night, just looking through the refrigerator and cupboards to find something I could make for myself with out going to the store I put together the recipe below - which turns out to be an amazing substitute. I'd say the recipe is for 2 - because I ate it for dinner and took leftovers to work for lunch the next day. But I could have eaten it all in one sitting.

Kitchen Sink Carbonara
Servings: 2

about 1/3 box of pasta (I always have tons of boxes of pasta that aren't quiet enough for me and the hubby - but its perfect for just me!)
1 cup Artichoke Jalapeno Dip (other dips would probably work here - but its what I used.)
1 clove garlic, chopped
2 sprigs of green onion, chopped
1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
1 teaspoon butter
3 pieces of turkey bacon
1 cup cheese, grated (I used a pre-grated blend... but again, I'm sure anything would work.)

Cook pasta according to package. While the pasta is cooking bake the turkey bacon in the oven at 375 degrees for about 8 minutes. Let the bacon cool a bit - then chop it up into small pieces.

Drain the pasta. While the pasta is draining, add the butter, garlic, green onion and red pepper flakes to the same pot you cooked the pasta in. Heat until fragrant. Add the dip and cheese and then add the pasta and stir. Turn off the heat and add the bacon pieces.

Then its time to eat! This was super easy - and I'm looking forward to sharing it with my husband. See if he'll enjoy it as much as I did.

Wellington Weather

Its the time of year that makes me want to put a log on the fire place, make a hot buttered rum and pull on some warm socks and boots and go for a walk in this crisp weather.

Friday Fixation: Holiday Music

I'm sure I've never pre-ordered a Christmas album before... But I wanted this one from the moment I saw the email from She & Him back in early October. I felt like I had to wait until after Halloween to talk about it, but now that Halloween is past - I had to share.

It came out Oct. 24 (I finally gave in and ordered it back on Oct. 17.) The cover just screams vintage christmas album, the vinyl is red - and the songs are beautiful.

Not sure there is much more I could have wanted from this. Oh, and it came with free She & Him wrapping paper. Swoon.

Happy Halloween (a day early!) Most of the Halloween related stuff is over... because it takes place on the weekend - but if you are looking for a last minute idea for tomorrow evening - here you go: Old Sacramento Halloween Party: Nightmare on 2nd Street, Maines Mansion 6th Annual Haunted House, Halloween Haunted House at the Whole Foods on Arden Way and Trick or Treat Night at IKEA.

For the rest of the week - there are some good options. Tuesday, Nov. 1 is the Vanilla Bean Bistro (formally Gonul's) cooking class. $39.50 a person - includes the instruction, food and wine pairing. The William-Sonoma store in Pavillions came out with their November calendar. Saturday at 11am - will be a Thanksgiving 101 class if you are hosting thanksgiving this year.

2010 Pancake Cellars Big Day White

I'm a big fan of wine. I like the whole experience. I love wine tasting and walking through vineyards and drinking reds and whites and of course the bubbly is probably my favorite (That's why we are members at Domaine Chandon!)

Everyone once in a while I buy some cheap stuff at Trader Joe's to supplement my collection. Recently I bought a bottle of 2010 Pancake Cellars Big Day White for under $5. I just wanted to have some cheap white around the house. This bottle was amazing for the price. Its a blend: 38% Sauvignon Blanc, 26% Viognier,17% Chardonnay, 13% Muscat Canelli and 6% Pinot Blanc. And its yummy.

From a quick Google, I'm not the only one who likes it - but I still wanted to share it with my readers. Get a bottle for your next Tuesday night glass of white.

Around Town: Week of Oct. 23

Halloween is getting close and there are some fun things to do this coming weekend. If you feel like heading up to Amador Wine Country on Friday my recommendation is Borjon Winery. They'll be hosting their 1st ever Halloween Party: Vino De Los Muertos. Tickets are only $5 and it seems like it will be a good time.

Take the kiddos over to Fairytale Town for the 25th Anniversary Safe & Super Halloween. The theme this year is Harry Potter -- and if I had a kid I'd be there. Kids can trick or treat at 17 candy stations and search for Horcruxes. Plus other fun Harry Potter related stuff. It started on the 21st - but if you missed this weekend you can go October 28 or 29 too. Tickets are $9 for members and $12 for nonmembers.

The California Native Plant Demonstration Garden is hosting their own Dia de los Muertos inside the cemetery. Learn some things about native plants while enjoying a Halloween celebration. Face painting and all. More info on their Facebook page.

And a "non Halloween" activity this week - that you should really check out is the live Garibaldi show at the Crest. If you haven't seen Garibaldi create his artwork live -- its a must. It's only $15 - and really entertaining. I love this Audrey Hepburn one (to the right.) We went last year and I was so impressed. Plus, he's a Sacramento native. Anyway, the way that his pieces come together as you watch (and enjoy some great music) is what is truely impressive. It's Oct. 26th.

Amazingly Easy Dessert

After who knows how many hours of clicking away on Pinterest - I saw this photo of Sopapilla Cheesecake. It looked so yummy. After clicking on the link that led me to My Yellow Umbrella and reading the recipe, I decided I had to give it a try.

I used her suggestion on the recipe of using Neufchatel cheese instead of regular cream cheese - and I also used the reduced fat crescent rolls. I also cut the recipe in 1/2 and used a 8x8 pan instead. It made the house smell wonderful as it cooked and it tasted amazing too!

Pink Pony

I'm sure most of my readers have seen the Pink Pony before, a great Ralph Lauren creation to help raise money and awareness for breast cancer. This year Ralph Lauren partnered up with Paperless Post to present 4 "Pink Pony" e-cards created by four fabulous bloggers: Blair Eadie from Atlantic-Pacific, Katie Armour from the neo-traditionalist, Heather Clawson from Habitually Chic and Dallas Shaw from Dilly Dallas.

The one created by Dallas Shaw is my favorite (above) but they are all lovely and support a great cause. Be sure to check it out.

Airport Art Tour

This past weekend the Crocker Art Museum offered a members only tour of the art in the new Sacramento Airport Terminal B that my mom and I went on. It was a great tour and I am really impressed with the new terminal. Each piece of art had a QR code nearby where you could scan and get more information about it - from the Sacramento Metropolitan Art Commission.

The first art piece that our docent showed us was called "Baggage Handlers" and was a brilliant piece made of small pieces of wood and the shadows that they create. This piece is on the back wall of the ticketing area. It was amazing to be able to walk right up to this piece and look at the wood it was made out of and the back up until the faces came into focus. Totally unique piece.

The second piece we saw is probably the most well known - the red rabbit jumping into a suitcase. This piece, by artist Lawrence Argent is called "Leap" and it spans 3 floors. Its just amazing to look at both up close (on the second floor) and further away. It reminded me of Alice in Wonderland with the rabbit jumping down a into a vortex.

An interesting little fact about this piece is that the granite suitcase part of the artwork actually weighs more then the huge rabbit!

There were a few amazing mosaic pieces on the floor - and I think my favorite was the one by local artist Suzanne Adan - called "Flying Colors."

I love the cartoonish birds with the bright worms in their beaks! I might be partial to the bird art - but the colors on this one are also amazing.

Anyway, if you haven't been to the terminal yet - add some time to look around (and find your way around - its completely different!)

Around Town: Oct 16 "Boats, Trains and... Charcuteries?"

Travel is the theme this week. Except for maybe the last item. Although you'd have to drive (or take a train) to Lodi.

Last week on Oct. 13 - the Hawaiian Chieftain arrived in Sacramento. It will stay in town until Dec. 13 so if you are interested in touring this piece of maritime history you have a while to plan it. Seems like it would be a neat thing for kids to experience. Its open for walk-on tours as well as scheduled educational programs.

Another fun this that started this weekend - and will continue Oct. 22-23 and Oct 29-30 is the Spookomotive Train Ride in Old Sacramento. Its a 40-minute ride along the river halloween style. Price is $10 for adults and $5 for kids.

On our honeymoon road trip - I developed a bit of an obsession over Charcuteries. I'm not a huge meat eater - but pork is the one meat I have a hard time refusing. So maybe that's why this first event made it onto my post, even though its a bit outside of town. Lodi has a neat cheese store right downtown called Cheese Central that hosts different interesting events. On Oct. 21st they are holding a Salami making workshop UOP history professor / cookbook author, Ken Albala. According to the Sacramento Magazine article on the class, participants are asked to bring a sharp knife and nothing else. Its $45 - which seems a little pricy - but dinner is also included so I'm still pretty tempted to sign up.

One event I'm featuring this week is actually next Sunday -- but I wanted to make sure to give people time to read about it! Its another event at the Crocker, this time a Free Family Festival on water. Looks like an interesting event - and almost everything at the Crocker is amazing. Especially that new section!

If you have season tickets to the Sacramento Speaker series or know someone who has an extra - David McCullough is the first speaker for this season. I really enjoy his books and would imagine he'd be an interesting speaker.

If you want some good music - Panic at the Disco is at Ace of Spades on Monday. I've seen Panic live before and it was a really good show. This is a smaller venue then when I saw them, which I imagine would be better.

Last but not least, just a reminder that this is an AMAZING time to go up to Apple Hill - so if you haven't already, head up their soon!

Friday Fixation: Pillows!

Most of my friends and loyal readers know about my love for all things shoes, owls and honeybees. But here is a new one I want to spring on you: throw pillows. I absolutely love having 8 - 10 different mix matched throw pillows on my living room couch and if I was any good at making my bed, I'd have them their too.

So when I saw these African Pillow Covers over at Angella Eisman Designs - I knew they deserved a Friday Fixation post. My favorite is this purple striped one. I especially love the golden trim.

October is my favorite month. It welcomes fall weather, pumpkins and Halloween. So here are some things for your first full week of October.

If you haven't been over to Bows & Arrows yet - you need to. If you need a reason then check out the new exhibit at the Bows Gallery of Jose Di Gregorio. The opening night reception is Oct. 7th from 6pm to 10pm but if you can't make that - then check it out on Saturday during Second Saturday.

Need something free for the kiddos? Check out the free sugar skull decorating class at Zanzibar Trading on Oct. 8th in honor of Dia de los Muertos.

How about a little Oktoberfest celebration? Its Sacramento's Turn Verein's 44th Annual celebration on Oct. 7. Parking can be crazy - but if you live in East Sac try walking or riding your bike.

Around Town: Week of Sept. 25

I'm starting this week with a good deed. If you attend the Sacramento Ballet "Drip for Dracula: Bloodsource Blood Drive" on Sept 27 - you can get BOGO tix to the ballet's upcoming Dracula. The Dracula performances are on Oct. 22, 23, 27 and 28. Perfect for Halloween!

Also starting this week is Shrek! The Musical as the first of the 2011-12 season of the Broadway Sacramento series. We have season tickets to these shows, and I am actually excited to see Shrek. I enjoyed the movies - and will be interested to see how it does as a musical. It runs from Sept. 27 thru Oct. 2.

Sept. 29th is the Kick-off for the Big Read / One Book Event at the Central Branch of the Library downtown. The book to read is The Adventures of Tom Sawyer - great reason to read (or re-read) a classic.

And one more item for this week - Slow Food Sacramento is holding a mixer at Lucca Restaurant for $20 per person. Small plates, passed apps and creative cocktails. Sounds like a good time to me!

The Help

Last night I went with my sister-in-law to go see the movie The Help. We both had just finished reading it - dsand LOVED it - so we wanted to see the movie too. The book is well worth picking up if you haven't already. Its a thick book, but the kind you can read in a few nights. I finished it in three days, while the current book I'm reading is only a few hundred pages and is taking for ever!

The movie was good too. Its obviously not as detailed as the book, and I really enjoyed some of the details they left out - but it was beautifully done. I really loved all the bright bold colors (of the clothing and the sets.) Its definately one I recommend reading first though!

Anyone else read the book or seen the movie yet?

The first place I have to start for this week is Pearl Jam. Pearl Jam is 20 years old. I'm not trying to make any of my readers (or myself) feel old - but OH MY. Anyways - if you want to celebrate this fact - check out the documentary "Pearl Jam Twenty" playing at the Crest for one night only - September 20. The 8:15p show is sold out - but there are still tickets available for the 10:30p show.

I've mentioned before the Slow Beer Movement Dinners and #8 is Sept. 19 at Formoli's Bistro. They'll be pairing food with one of my favorite breweries: Lagunitas Brewing Company. If we're around this might be one I'd participate in.

I love the National Honey Board. That may seem odd, but considering how much I love honey, I just think they have great PR people. I love their newsletter with recipes and now they have honey ecards which are adorable.

They dress up their little honey bear in various themes including, get well, happy birthday and spa day!

Just look at that little bear all ready for the spa. Best part: each card includes a honey recipe.

So fun. I can't wait to find a good time to send one!

I stumbled across in blue's etsy shop on pinterest - and I'm loving it! The leather goods look like great quality - but they aren't too expensive. Of course my favorite is the leather journal with the little owl on it.

I also really like the "Not All Who Wander Are Lost" journal. Seems like the perfect place to write down your traveling tales. They also have iphone / ipad cases and wallets. Seems like the have a pattern or design for every type of person -- could be a great shop for presents! I'll be back here before Christmas for sure...

Family Coincidence

My family tree research is pretty much maxed out. I've tracked the Runyeon side of my family back to the French Huguenot days, and I mostly just find small bits of family info here and there now. But one thing I found out the other day was that one of the family crests rumored to be part of the "Rongnion" line is this image to the left.

Its a crest with three honeybees on it with the phrase "Mel Regi" under it. Meaning "Queen Honeybee."

So maybe my honeybee obsession is more deeply rooted then I imagined...

The New Yorker's Fashionable Side

There is a lot of talk about Fashion this week... All the fashion shows start soon and yesterday was the National "Fashion Night Out" so it seems to be all over. In honor of that The New Yorker is offering 20% off its fashion themed covers - and there are some really nice ones.

Here are a few of my favorites.

First is the 1948 cover of the lady putting her makeup on - done by Constantin Alajalov. The next is a 2008 cover of a yellow shoe in a bird cage done by Ana Juan. The third is a great cover from 2004 of a lady in a fur coat covered with cats done by Ana Juan as well.

Zip Line Time!

One of the items on my 30before30 list was to Zip Line at the Moaning Caverns. Well, in a little edit I think I get to count the zip line adventure we had in Canada. Right outside of Sooke, BC - we went on a 2 hour zip line adventure which I hear is actually a lot better then the Moaning Cavern line.

So here we are and that's another item knocked off my list. Unfortunately we didn't see any Northern Lights... so that one is still there.

Vintage Fashion Tips

I love looking through old newspapers. For my family tree research its especially helpful - since The Reading Eagle has most of its issues stored on Google's archive news files.
Looking through an issue today I found this great tip from 1912.
It reads as follows:
Not only my lady's footwear, but also her headwear is buckled now. Huge metal buckles adorn the modish millinery for autumn days and though these big buckles are a bit severe over the elderly and plain face, above a pretty face they are charming.
A great fashion tip - that I thought we could all use.

We visited the Empress Hotel on our honeymoon (well, we walked through it and visited the gift shop) so maybe that contributes to my having Tea on my brain. But when I saw these Pret-a-porTEA bags... I had to share them.

I just love the image of Karl Lagerfeld leaning back in a cup of tea. The pack includes other great choices like Donatella Versace and Naomi Campbell.

This could make a great house warming gift for any fashionista. Maybe with a set of mismatching vintage tea cups?

The Crocker Art Museum stays open late on Thursdays (till 9 p.m.) and has some neat events. This week on Sept. 8, they are hosting a French Themed Garden Party! They'll even have an Absinthe bar... This one I'll have to check out for sure.

Also on Sept. 8 - is the Fashion's Night Out event at Pavillions in Sacramento. Joel Madden of Good Charlotte will be DJing and their will be shopping, fashion shows and of course food and drinks!

Seems like a good event to check out if the Crocker event isn't your style. It runs from 6pm to 8pm.
And of course, today is the last day of the Sacramento Greek Food Festival too - so if you haven't gone - go now!

Look into Your Family History

I've mentioned before my obsession with Geneology. Maybe just part of my old soul personality, but I love finding things out about my relatives. If you have the same curiousity I do, but don't know where to start, now is the time to check out Ancestry.com. August 29 - September 5 is Free Access Week to immigration and travel records.

If you do sign on - let me know if you find any interesting facts about your family!

As a side note to all this geneology stuff, I'm reading a great book right now that talks alot about researching family history. The Winter Sea by Susanna Kearsley is awesome so far (I'm about 1/2 way through with it.) Its like historical fiction with a bit of geneology mixed in!

Nada Sawaya Geometric Handbags

I'm not sure what the word "Minaudieres" means - but the clutches Nada Sawaya lists in that section on her website are totally unique. I'm really digging the wooden geometric ones like the one to the left.

They have other materials too including shell, crocodile and stingray. Not so sure about the last two materials - but they shell ones are pretty neat too.

Around Town: Free (or close to it!) Edition

My first thing to do around town this week - is to take advantage of Free-Admission Day tomorrow courtesy of Target. If you feel like giving back - bring a unwrapped Back-to-School item to donate (the zoo has been collecting items all month.)

Another freebie for the week for Bank of America Customers is BofA's Museums on Us program. The first full weekend of every month (which would be September 3 and 4 this week) just show your BofA card for free admission. In the Sacramento area that applies for both the Crocker Art Museum and the California Museum for History, Women and the Arts.

Of course I have to mention the Greek Food Festival... and keeping with the free theme - lunch time on Friday (11am to 3pm) is free!

I found this nail polish color on pinterest from butter LONDON that I love - inspired by Alexander McQueen. Hence the name, "All Hail McQueen." I'm thinking its a must purchase for me if I can find it. Its from the Fall 2010 butter LONDON collection. I just love the gold flakes in it.

Oh What to do with old CD's...

How about make some art? Like this beautiful metallic sea of 65,000 old CDs made by French artist Elise Morin and architect Clémence Eliard. I think its awesome. I wish some Sacramento artists could get inspired like this... and I wish the city would open up some of our older historic buildings (maybe part of the railyards project??) and bring some artists in to create stuff like this.

Of course, its more likely to happen in Europe. Maybe the new Crocker could figure something like this out?

Around Town - Sing Out Loud!

If I had any sort of vocal talent I'd participate in this. The Sacramento Choral Society's 2011 Summer Sing is August 11 at 7pm at St. Johns Lutheran Church (17th and Lst.) Its an impromptu concert of Brahm's Requiem. BYOS (Bring Your Own Score) or you can purchase it at the door.

If you're more the quiet type - the Arden-Dimick Library (Watt Ave. and Northrop Blvd.) is having a Tomato Cooking Demo with recipes and samples tomorrow, Aug. 8 from 6:30p to 7:30p.

Charity Walks are always a great thing to participate in - because you get some exercise while helping a great cause. On Aug. 13 - the Getty Owl Foundation is hosting a walk and art auction to raise money called "Hoot the Grid." It sounds like a good time - and if I was pre-occupied that night - I'd be there.

Well last week went well! The pizzetta was yummy - we added sliced green tomatoes (as you can see) and it was great!

It was a super simple recipe - I just spread pesto over two (one for each of us) whole wheat pieces of Naan bread and topped with sliced gouda, two slices of green tomato each, topped with leftover shredded chicken and some feta cheese.

Pizza's are so easy... You can really just throw a handful of ingredients that you like together and put on top crust. Or in this case Naan.

Anyways, here what I'm planning for this week.

Monday: Chicken and Bok Choy Stir Fry
Tuesday: Sophia's Thai Kitchen in Davis (Groupon!)
Wednesday: Blackened Tilapia with Cilantro Lime Slaw

Around the Town: Festivals and Fairs!

If you didn't go to the State Fair last week - this might be the week for you. Friday, July 29 is California Wine Day at the State Fair - in my opinion the best day to go. You can tour the vineyard, see special cooking demos and art demos - and check out some of the award wining wines at the wine garden.

In fact its also the day of the Taste and Celebrate the Best Wine! charity event - which is $25 not including fair admission. This is the even where they announce the best wines for 2011.

How about the Sacramento TomatoFest? Its at the Town & Country Village on July 30 and admission is free. Sample some tomato food (salsa, bruschetta, etc.) from some of the top restaurants in Sacramento. There is wine tasting here too if you are interested. Plus Tomato Gelato.... hum.

Not a festival / fair person? Ok - head on over to Fox and Goose at 7pm on Tuesday, July 26 for a Pub Quiz with former SF Giants pitcher Don Carrithers. All the questions will be sports related - but still sounds like a fun time!

And if you're just in need of something sweet this week - I recommend stopping by Ginger Elizabeth's on Saturday, June 30. Its Cupcake Day! I'll be getting a Peach Melba Cupcake. For sure.

Friday Fixation: Brown Bag..

When I say brown bag, I'm not talking about your lunch. I'm talking about this yummy Picnic bag from Marie Turnor. As soon as I saw this post on simple blueprint all I could think about was owning this bag. I can just imagine myself sitting with it on the table on a french bistro, or maybe a bistro in Yountville is more my speed... but I can see it.

It also reminded me of this Miss Dior Cherie video I posted a while back - just lovely.

This may sound like I'm trying to convince myself that this purchase is ok, but its actually only $175. I imagined it (right after the french bistro dream) being a lot more then that. $175 makes it seem with in reach. Which may be a bad thing.

My husband told me I should donate that money to a charity instead... which quickly brought me back to reality and that we are supposed to be saving money right now so we can buy a house. Ok. I'll hold off on pushing purchase. For now...

Owl Themed...

There are some words that just jump out at me. My google reader is so packed that I probably read about 10% of what comes up on it. I just don't have time to be as comprehensive in my blog reading as I'd like to be. But there are words that stand out to me. I'd say mostly: "Owl" "Honeybee" and "Train".

So when I was about to clear my 1000+ unread google reader posts. I stopped when I saw the "Woodland Owl Baby Shower" post over at Hostess with the Mostess. I mean, look at the cake - its adorable!

Anyways, then I thought I'd share all the owl stuff over at the Hostess Blog - because this isn't the first time owls have caught my eye on this. Like the Rustic Baby Shower and the cute owl goodie bags.

The Anthropology Owl Baby Shower had this cute guestbook set up - that could be applied to any party where you are having people sign in or write something down.

That set up is probably my favorite of all the owl ideas on the Hostess blog. As a side note, this is a great site to check out for ideas for any type of party.

It looks like tomorrow, July 20th is the launch of Eat Love Savour a new digital quarterly magazine and I'm excited to see what it holds.

Fashion, champagne, shoes - all topics I love have been covered in the articles I've checked out so far, so I'm hoping the digital magazine adds some more of the same content. You can follow the magazine on Twitter: @angelatunner to keep on top of the articles they post outside of the magazine.

I'm hoping to see some foodie stuff too... considering the first word is "eat."

This week I'm starting with a event tomorrow (July 18.) You can check out the Slow Beer Movement Dinner #6 at Red Lotus featuring beers from Sierra Nevada. Its $55 online or $60 at the door. But you have to pay a fee online... so I'm not sure what the benefit is to buy in advance... other then about .98 cents.

Anyways sounds like an interesting event that happens the 3rd monday of every month. If any of my Sactown readers have been I'd be interested in hearing about it.

Harry Potter Opening Weekend = Craziness at the Theaters!

Well its the final Harry Potter movie's opening weekend. This may make me sound quiet nerdy - but I really enjoyed reading the books - and watching the movies.

Luckily for me, I'm behind a bit and haven't seen the first 1/2 of the finale so I have no desire to even try to see it this weekend.

If you haven't heard the statistics yet - its something like 90% of all ticket sales for this weekend are for Harry Potter. Poor Winnie the Pooh. And its already made over 32 million in advanced ticket sales.

So here's how I'm thinking about honoring the end of the Harry Potter era this weekend: watch the first 1/2 of this movie (maybe its OnDemand?) and make some Butterbeer to have with it.

Anyone want to fess up to going to see it on opening night?

The Black Flats Hunt

Its been a while since a real, honest to goodness shoe post. So I thought I'd share my recent shoe search: Black Flats.

I desperately need new ones. New ones that I love. I have a pair that is falling apart and I have a pair that I bought to replace them BUT I just don't like them as much. Anyways - I made a throw out day. Friday, July 15 I will be throwing out my worn out pair. I'll also be putting the pair I don't like in my "donate" pile.

So I have a few days to find a pair that will work. Endless.com is my go-to site for shoes. Free overnight or 2-day shipping means fast delivery and the searching is seamless. From the over 1,200 black flats on endless - here are my top 5.

Around Town: Country Style!

This next weekend is the Marysville Peach Festival. My grandmother's family had a peach ranch up in the Yuba area so I'm partial to the yummy fruit. An added bonus about this festival is that its free (admission and parking!)

They have live music both nights - The Chris Gardner Band on Friday night (July 15) and Tijuana Taxi on Saturday (July 16.) This is definately an affordable family outing for anyone in the Sacramento area. If you want some exercise you can participate in the Peach Fest 5K Run / Walk as well.

You can stay local and get a little country too since July 14th is Country Night at the River Cats. For $16 (and up) you can go see the River Cats play the Grizzlies and get a cowboy hat with your ticket! I might just go and bring my own cowboy hat.

Letters!

Do you still write people letters? I don't really, but I think I'd like to get better at sending postcards and occasion cards (Birthdays, Anniversaries, Get Well, etc.) I started thinking about all these when I saw this Owl Letter Holder on Urban Outfitters.

(Did you know it would come back to Owls?)

Anyway, I want it. But I'd like it to look as full as the owl in the photo... which I don't think would happen. We don't recieve or send enough letter-like mail to make it look like that.

We'd have to save a months worth of mail.

But this still might end up being a purchase.... I just can't help myself!

A Good Reason for Happy Hour

Not that you ever need a reason for happy hour - but here is one.

The Greater Sacramento Chapter of Big Brothers, Big Sisters has partnered with 11 different local restaurants to offer "Cocktails for a Cause" in the month of July.

The participating restaurants are: DeVere’s Irish Pub, District 30, Dive Bar, Ella Dining Room and Bar, Grange, L Wine Lounge, Lounge on 20, Mulvaney’s, Pizza Rock, Red Lotus and Zocalo. The drinks are all named "Big Brother / Big Sister" (I wish they had gotten a little more creative with that one...)

Anyway, I am interested to try one out. Anyone up for a happy hour?

Amazon's New Site: MyHabit

Amazon has a new "members only" type site called MyHabit. If you have an Amazon account you automatically get a MyHabit account - so pretty much everyone should be able to login. I haven't really had a chance to explore the site much but it looks like it has potential. I like the Erin Fetherston sale especially this Leia dress... but I don't know when I'd where it.

So no purchases yet for me - I'll definately be keeping my eye on this site.

Every Second Sunday Sacramento features an Antique Fair at 21st Street between W and X Streets. I've been really meaning to check it out - but unfortunately I always have something planned. Including the one next weekend on July 11. Maybe next month.

This past Wednesday we went and saw "Defending the Caveman" at the Cosmo Cabaret. And I'd say its worth checking out. I can only vouch for the actor I saw do it (the rotate actors thru September) so go see it in the next few weeks before they switch it up.

We also went to the Twilight Thursday Concert at the zoo last week - and I'd totally recommend this to anyone in the area. I won tickets on Twitter for Social Media Day (thanks SacramentoZoo!) but I want to go this Thursday (July 7) too. Its a Beatles Tribute Band and sounds like a good time!

So there are my choices for this week! Tell me any other recommendations!

Literary Spin-Offs: Yay or Nay?

I loved Wicked and the other Gregory Maguire spin-offs. So when FlavorWire did a Required Reading post on the 10 Great Literary Spin-Offs I was interested to see my other options. They even mentioned a book I recently read (and thought was great) called March that is a spin-off to Little Women. And while they weren't all my first choice to see spin-offs of (I HATED Beowulf and can't imagine reading a spin-off) they had some good recommendations.

I have heard of Wide Sargasso Sea before - but haven't read it. The Hours was a great book (and movie) and I'd love to reread it. I've never heard of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead but I love FlavorWire's description so I added it to my Goodreads wishlist.

Anyways, check out the list. But note my disappointment that Wicked didn't make it.

Knocked Another Item Off My List!

I've been an AWFUL blogger lately - so first let me say sorry for that. But for a quick update on my 30before30 list (now 30while30) I beat Jonny at Scrabble! I guess if you play enough its bound to happen and it may never happen again - but at least I can say that I've done it. So that's #15 done.

I also attended my first Toastmasters Meeting - which I am going to count for #24 my public speaking class.

Maybe the zip line at moaning cavern next?

I've talked about bookplates before. But I had to share these simply because of the owl one.

"Whoooooo does this book belong to?" I love it!

This site, For Immediate Release Reviews - Kids, is awesome by the way. I always check it out when I am looking for a good book to give as a gift to a little kiddo.

Like "A Book of Sleep" (while we are talking about owls) looks so cute and has some great artwork. Anyways this is definitely a site to bookmark and come back to.

Amusing Planet

I always enjoy checking out photographs from all over the world. This website I just stumbled across- Amusing Plant - is a good spot to do just that. I was enthralled with the 3 month later shots of Japan after the initial clean up efforts. Like they say, it is amazing to see the different areas and how the process is moving along.

The sad part is the areas that look like they haven't had much repair.

Amusing Planet also had a post of before and after satellite photos of the damage.

I also enjoyed looking through the photos that they posted from Red Bull Flugtag (which I saw once in Portland!) The flying machines that people build are always fun to see.... even if none of them actually make it very far.

From what I remember of the Flugtag event I went to - most of the machines end up nosediving into the water (like this cow looks like its about to do.) But its still a good time!

If you're near Tampa in October... you should check out the US event!

Anyways back to Amusing Planet... great site to check out for pictures from around the world.

Hive Honey Jars

I'm a bit honey obsessed. Its pretty much the only form of sugar / sweetener that I like. So when I opened my fab.com email today - and saw the Hive Honey Jars - I had to share. Maybe if I had a jar like this it would prevent me from getting honey all over everything - which is what happens now.

A Hip Hotel... in um Bakersfield?

I used to do some traveling to Bakersfield for work... and really haven't been back since those days. When I saw the website and pictures for The Padre Hotel in Bakerfield... I was amazed.

The names of their rooms? You could stay in the Oil Baron Suite or the Farmer's Daughter Suite. Or a double duece room.

And I love, love, love the graphic behind the registration desk! This hotel should be a model for what other cities (including Sacramento) could do to some old historic buildings.

The nightlife looks options decent (although I get nervous because its Bakersfield) and the restaurants look pretty.

If I ever need a hotel in Bakersfield again... I'll be here.

Around the Town: Get yourself Outdoors!

Next weekend (June 25 to be exact) is the Great American Backyard Campout. The Sacramento REI is hosting a free afternoon event at the Effie Yeaw Nature Center where they are going to go over camping tips and tricks, sing campfire songs and eat S'mores. Yum! I love Effie Yeaw Nature Center and totally recommended it if you are looking for a place to take a walk or teach your kiddos about wildlife.

I'm jealous that I don't have a backyard... but if we did I would be participating.

If you are backyard-less like me there is more stuff to do next weekend. How about the King of Feasts Wine and Food Luau at the Sacramento Zoo? Dress in your luau attire and try your hand at the hola hoop contest. I guarantee you aren't as good as you used to be! Its surprising when you haven't tried since you were a kid...

The Friday Night Concerts in the Park at Cesar Chavez Plaza (10th and J) are going to be featuring Mumbo Gumbo on Friday, June 24. Probably will be crowded... but its got a great price tag (its free.)

For the foodies (or sac newbies) there is always the City of Trees Food Tasting Tour. This is an ongoing tour so maybe just something to keep in your back pocket for sometime when you have foodie visitors. It seems like they offer it Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday every week for $58 a person... which includes the food.

So there is some ideas... plan away! (P.S. Love these camping photos from the U.S. National Archives)

Well tomorrow is a big day for dad's everywhere - and in honor I thought I'd share this infographic: How your dad's music influences your taste.

Does your dad listen to the Greatful Dead, Beethoven, Miles Davis or Iron Maiden? I think they should have a few more options... but I'll go with what they offer. If you showed this infographic to my dad - he'd ask you where the Emmylou Harris choice is.

I'd say the closest of these choices would be the Greatful Dead for my dad... and if I follow the little chart, it tells me I listen to.... Ben Harper! Who I do really like, so ok, I guess it says something.

Since I own all of his old LP's now - I guess I already knew he had some influence.

Friday Fixation: black + blum

Some times I find little online shops that make me want to purchase everything on their site. This websites normally end up featured here in Friday Fixation. I haven't posted one in a few weeks -- maybe because I really hadn't found anything I felt worthy of a FF post.

I think black + blum is. The items they sell are so creative and so clean. I mean, just look at the layout on their products page? The item I immediately wanted was this Lunch Box Revolution Cookbook. I really need to get on top of it about bringing lunches to work - and it just looks so inspiring that I might do it. $8 isn't a bad price either!

Another item that jumped right out at me? This hot-pot bbq. Its a little out of my price range for what it is (especially since we have a little Weber already) - but how awesome would it be to hid your bbq in a terracotta pot with a plant in it?

If its in your price range I could see it being a great gift for a dad.

Anyways check out black + blum. At least for some design inspiration.

The topics range from "Why You Should Teach Your Kids to Surf" to "Garage Storage Solutions & Car Cleaning Tips" even a "New Dad's Guide to Mother's Day." Seems like some pretty useful stuff.

It even offers tips on how to win a fight with your wife... even if the first rule should be that the wife is always right.

I think it might become a regular site I visit myself.

Around Town: Its finally feeling like June!

Hi my honeybees - here are some items to think about in Sacramento next week and next weekend. Planning something fun makes time fly!

Metro Edge is planning its 2nd annual Dodgeball Tourney. Deadline to register is June 15 (the event is on the 18th) and they have volleyball too. Teams are 10-12 people for dodgeball and 8 for volleyball... so get your team together and sign up. If I wasn't busy that day I'd make a team right now! You can see pictures from last year on the Metro Edge Facebook page.

One of my favorite restraurants, Gonul's, has moved and changed names. It's now Vanilla Bean Bistro and has moved near 33rd and J St in the same spot that used to be Formoli's (and Formoli's moved to where Gonul's was at 39th and J St.) I am super excited to try out Gonul Blum's new bistro -- but I'm also excited to be able to walk to Formoli's. This seems like a win win. I'll be sure to report back on the Vanilla Bean Bistro!

June 17 marks the start of the 10th Annual Sacramento French Film Festival. The trailer for opening night "Names of Love" looks pretty good. You can see the whole schedule on the Crest Theaters website. If you are a Crocker Art Museum member (like me) you get a discount on tickets to the individual films.

I love the poster for the festival too - such a pretty vintage book!

Beer. I just discovered this new website - that I don't quite know how to describe called Tanga. This shirt is what made me decide to post about it.

Tanga seems like a discount sale site aimed at the male population. Lots of t-shirts with silly stuff on them and lots of unusual board games (another thing that caught my eye) like Cargo Noir. I mean a board game where you can be a smuggler? Sounds fun to me.

The thing that makes this site different - and slightly confusing for me - is that they also host games on the site. Some of which you can win prizes for playing - while others are just for your enjoyment.

Kinda odd. But it might be a good site to keep in your back pocket come Christmas time... I see some good gift ideas.

Puppy Love.

I really want one. I want a puppy that will grow into a big dog. Like a Great Dane, or a Bernese Mountain Dog, or a Scottish Deerhound. I mean, look at that cute little Great Dane babyface? Don't you wanna squeeze him?

But at the same time - I want a rescue. Which probably means no pure bred puppies. They do have a Great Dane Nor Cal Rescue and a Bernese Mountain Dog Rescue (northern Ca) the Scottish Deerhounds are harder to find. I guess that's what I get for being so picky.

ANYWAYS, my whole purpose of writing this post - was really to share this cute doggy shirt (obviously too small for any doggy I want) advocating for rescue doggies. (P.S. I found it on Pinterest! Love that site!)

Aw well, some day I'll have a big yard and I'll be able to rescue a gentle giant...

I just added a new members only site to my list. Fab.com. It just launched today... with some totally unique stuff, including chairs made from recycled coke bottles! The thing that caught my eye in this sale was the signed Milton Glaser posters. My favorite being the Dylan one (to the left.)

I can tell that the design products featured here are going to be amazing (still slightly too expensive for me) but amazing.

Fast Food Mafia

Fast food is not really my thing. I don't like or drink soda... I'm not a big red meat fan... basically I might want some fast food tacos now and then... but that's about it.

I did love this Fast Food Mafia poster that I found over at deviantART. DeviantART is basically a social media site for artists and you can stumble across some cool things.

My favorite of this group is Wendy. I love how serious she looks. You could totally see this being some cartoon on Adult Swim, right?

Plot lines are already forming in my head.

MPM: Week of June 6

Well, this week isn't going to be easy for menu planning. Wednesday is my birthday and this week is supposed to be a detox week for my KAIA FIT class. So I'm supposed to be eating healthy the week I turn 30. This could be difficult. But here is my attempt.

Monday: Happy Hour at Mayahuel
Tuesday: Lettuce Wraps
Wednesday: Bday celebration with the Hubby!
Thursday: Broiled Salmon with Spinach & Feta Saute
Friday: Grilled Spring Equinox Chicken Salad
Saturday: Chili Bean-Stuffed Peppers (Quinoa instead of Rice)
Sunday: Wedding!

Well this is going to be a fun week. And I'll try my best to stick to the detox plan (although I'll have a drink or two tonight and Wednesday in celebration.) Here are more menus to browse over at Orgjunkie!

Bookcase Spelling

If your bookcase could talk - what would it say? Ours would probably say "Need More Space!"

Well I found over at August Empress the ABC Bookcase an awesome idea from Saporiti.

You could even create bookcases for the different types of books you have - nonfiction, horror, mystery, travel, cook(books)... I could go on and on.

Big problem now is that I want them and I don't know how to get them! Dang Italian website!

Around Town

I'm going to try and do some sort of regular feature to call out things to do around Sacramento - called "Around Town." Here is my first attempt!

This started because I wanted to share the Yoga in the Park info. I've always seen the Sat morning group over at McKinley Park... but never quite knew enough about it. Finally I looked into it and found the Yoga in the Park facebook page! I'm super excited to try it.

Tonight I'm heading out to see Mary Poppins as the last show of the Broadway Sacramento 2010-2011 season.... and I am super excited for next season, which includes Wicked! I love having these season tickets.

Saturday, June 11 is one of nights (first for the summer) for the family overnight safari's at the zoo. I think this sounds like such a fun family idea. It's a bit pricey - Sac Zoo Members: Adults $50, Children (ages 4-17) $46 and Non-members: Adults $60, Children $56... but it does include dinner and breakfast.

Rainbows? In June?

With the weather we've been having in Sacramento, its not that unlikely. But luckily, this post has nothing to do with the rain.

Its another free printable from Making it Lovely... that you can frame and hang for some instant artwork. My favorite kind.

I loved the movie The Man Who Knew Too Much - and the song Que Sera. So this print might mean more to me then you. But its pretty so I'll share it anyways!

It's June!

Well here we are a few days into June -- and I thought I should share some June calendars for your desktop. The first one (to the right) seems rather appropriate unfortunately. This rainy June weather is not fun. I mean, a tornado warning in Sacramento on the 1st of June? Crazy.

I always love the desktop calendars from Chocolate and Zucchini and this pink garlic one is great! Makes me want to take some photos at my farmers market. You should check out the recipes at Chocolate and Zucchini too - they are always inspiring.

Over at Jennifer Squires Productions Blog there is a beautiful picture from Ontario Canada that could grace your desktop for June. What a peaceful photo to see when you turn on your computer in the morning.

The pretty calendar over at Food0grafia is probably my favorite. Its very Alice in Wonderland. I love the red queen and the cherries ... it just makes me happy.

I think I've found mine for June!

Online Invites

Everyone seems to still use Evites for online invites to things... but I wanted to share an alternatives - my favorite online invite site - Pingg. While there are some invites and special features you have to pay for on pingg - for the most part things are free.

Like both this fiesta invite and this cheers to me invite. The great thing about Pingg is that they offer both designs for invites and designs for ecards.

You can even do pretty e-thank you cards and save the paper.

I've used Pingg for my annual pumpkin carving party - and am looking forward to finding another great one to use this year.

An Owl and a Camera on a Pillow

This is a quick one - but I just wanted to share. I found myself over at Ourlieu to look at expensive and beautiful pillows - when I saw this one.

Which I really want. That's pretty much all I have to say. An owl on a camera on a pillow. Its lovely.
